NEWSLETTER 48: January 2012

A VERY HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR MEMBERS

The importance of our gardens for birds and wildlife

OUR guest speaker this month is Martin Overy, a chartered land surveyor who has been an amateur birdwatcher for more than 35 years.

Martin's subject
will be "Gardens and birds" and will cover various aspects such as how birds
use gardens and how they can be encouraged to visit and the importance of
gardens as a habitat for birds and other wildlife.

NEXT    MONTH:
Dorothy Lomas will be talking about "The Fox Family of Cold Harbour Mill" and
sharing with us her involvement in rescuing the archives of the Fox Brothers
business which, in its time, was one of the most successful in the South West,  selling cloth world-wide and inventing puttees and the khaki dye.

The    final day for subs: January 31

RENEWAL
subscriptions for membership of Exe Valley U3A should have been paid by
December 31 - but the committee allows an extra month for those paying
late.
The final deadline for payment is Tuesday,January 31. Anyone not renewing by then will no longer to able to attend monthly meetings or belong to any of the activity groups.

Group leaders are asked to be active in ensuring that all those at meetings are paid up. The main reason for this is to ensure the insurance policy which covers our activities protects our members.  Another reason is that the groups are run solely for members.

Treasurer Paul will be collecting subs today. It is £9 for a single and £17 for a couple. Those not at the meeting can contact Paul to arrange for payment by cheque and post.

                Equal subscriptions for all?

Talking of subs, some members of the committee have been approached by members expressing a view that all subscriptions should be the same - whether the member is single or married.     This opinion is being considered by the committee and a proposal relating to this will be put to the annual meeting in March along with any possible changes to subscriptions for the year beginning January 1, 2013.

In the meantime membership is as stated above: £9 for a single person and £17 for a couple. These figures can only be changed at the AGM and those would then apply to the following year.

Our   March AGM

DETAILS about the
annual general meeting in March will be published in next month's newsletter
and put on the website for all to see. The information will include the agenda
and a form for anyone wishing to stand as an officer or a member of the
committee.

We would like to express our thanks for
those who have said they are prepared to stand for the committee. We still need
more names and hope that there will be competition for places at the meeting.

Quiz  tickets: Your last chance

Sign  up and join in…

SOME would say that the best part of being in the U3A is belonging to a group.

Well here is your chance to become involved in getting some new groups up and running - or joining existing ones.

Following on from our very successful Open
Day in November, and with the influx of new members,  there have been requests to form the
following: Spanish, canasta, chess, family history for beginners, gentle yoga,
beginners' bridge and local community research.

There will be forms to fill out today to express your interest at today's meeting and anyone can contact group co-ordinator Ro Darlington.

Coffee morning for all on February 6

WE are running a coffee morning at the Tiverton Rugby Club on Monday, February 6, from 10.30 am until 12 noon. We hold these events occasionally to give new and recently
joined members a chance to find out more about Exe Valley U3A in a convivial
atmosphere. We hope as many members as possible will come.

Pride  and Prejudice: A talk

WE are asking
members to support an event being run by Tiverton U3A at St George's Church
hall on Tuesday, March 20, from 2 to 4pm.
The guest speaker will be Jonathan Edmunds
and his subject Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Entry on the day will be £2.
